USB Drives – How big is a Gig?

Kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, petabyte, bajillabyte… okay, there’s no such thing as a bajillabyte (yet). Nearly avengers-usb2everything we use today requires memory but what does it all mean? In the world of digital information storage, how do we make sense of virtual size? Just how big is a Gig?

In technological terms, a gigabyte (GB) is 1,024 megabytes (MB), or 1,073,741,824 bytes. In everyday tangible terms, a GB is pretty darn big. A 1GB USB Drive can hold 16 hours of music (about 230 songs), 600 photos, 7 hours of video content and almost a full-length film at 1.5 GB. With the capacity to hold 18,874 Word documents, 3,146 PDF documents or 2,860 PowerPoint Presentations, you can pack at least a year of your career in a single 1GB USB Drive.*

With USB memory space, bigger isn’t just better, bigger is simply more useful. The higher the utility of your branded USB drive, the higher the value your end-user will place on your brand. That means your product will be at hand for a significantly longer amount of time and since USB memory is re-usable (you can copy, delete and repeat) you’ll likely be a superhero time and time again.

Even though 1GB is a lot of memory, a 1GB USB drive doesn’t quite hold 1GB; most USB Drives hold 90-98% of their stated capacity. Why is that? It’s primarily due to the remaining space being taken by file-system metadata which ensures reliability of the file-system and organization of your stored data. You wouldn’t be able to access the information you’re storing on a USB drive without it, so think of that metadata as your USB’s internal superhero.
